A meme is a miserable pile of secrets, or anything that is used and reused beyond it's life expectancy. Formal meaning for meme is "a unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another."

Some memes are deliberately created, called forced memes, especially labeled this way if they fail to catch on. Some are borrowed from other sources, usually from sites like SomethingAwful, 2chan, and 2ch. Many memes come about entirely by accident. Major GETs on /b/ are a common source of memes, and the vast majority of 4chan's new memes originate from /b/.

Despite 4chan's memes being a defining element of the board's culture, the mods often seem to find them annoying. The term itself was coined by the evolutionist [[:w:Richard Dawkins], and its correct pronunciation rhymes with "gene" ("meem"). "Mem" is also an alternate pronunciation. If you pronounce it "mim", you're a newfag. If you pronounce it "meemee" or "mehmeh", you're a faggot.

Copypasta may be considered a meme when it is so common that the original and all mutations can recognize be recognized by the masses.
